Monitor's Controls/Buttons Click/Stuck OSD Randomly Appears

Published: at 11:32 AM

Encountering an on-screen display (OSD) that appears randomly or unresponsive monitor buttons?

The below 1st solution worked for me! At least the frequency was reduced greatly. From every 10-15 minutes to every 1-2 months.

After a few months, I decided to take out the monitor buttons altogether!

Worth Noting: If your monitor is relatively modern, it might support DDC/CI (Display Data Command Interface) which is a newer protocol for communication between the monitor and your computer. This feature is required so you can use custom softwares to control the monitor’s settings.

Several factors can contribute to erratic OSD behavior and unresponsive buttons:

Troubleshooting Techniques:

  1. Power Cycle with Extended Discharge:

    • Turn Off and Unplug: Power down the monitor and disconnect it from the power outlet.
    • Hold the Power Button: While unplugged, press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. This discharges any residual charge within the monitor’s circuits.
    • Reconnect and Power On: After 30 seconds, plug the monitor back into power and turn it on. This power cycle with a forced discharge can often resolve temporary electronic glitches causing the erratic behavior.

  2. Physical Inspection:

    • Examine Buttons: Carefully inspect the monitor’s buttons for any visible damage, dust, or debris that might be causing them to stick. Gently clean the buttons with a dry microfiber cloth.
  3. Software Updates:

    • Update Drivers: Consider updating your graphics card drivers to the latest version. Outdated drivers can sometimes lead to communication issues between the monitor and your computer.
  4. Manufacturer’s Guidance:

    • Consult the Manual: Refer to your monitor’s user manual for any specific troubleshooting steps or reset procedures recommended by the manufacturer. They might offer additional insights specific to your monitor model.
