How to Change the Default Download Folder in Microsoft Edge

Published: at 07:16 AM

By default, Microsoft Edge downloads files to the Downloads folder in your user profile. If you’d like to change this to a different folder, you can modify the Windows registry to adjust the download path.

Steps to Change Edge’s Download Folder Using Registry Editor

  1. Open Registry Editor:

    • Press Win + R to open the Run dialog box.
    • Type regedit and press Enter.
    • If prompted by User Account Control (UAC), click Yes to grant administrative permissions.
  2. Navigate to the Registry Key:

    • In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following location:
      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

  3. Find the Download Key:

    • In the User Shell Folders key, look for the value {374DE290-123F-4565-9164-39C4925E467B}. This corresponds to the Downloads folder.
  4. Change the Download Path:

    • Right-click the {374DE290-123F-4565-9164-39C4925E467B} entry and select Modify.
    • In the Value data field, change the path to the desired download folder. For example, you can set it to:
      C:\Users\YourUsername\Documents\MyDownloads

    • Click OK to save your changes.
  5. Close Registry Editor:

    • Once the path is modified, close the Registry Editor.
  6. Restart Your PC:

    • To apply the changes, restart your computer. After the restart, Microsoft Edge should use the new folder as the default download location.
