How to Leave or Delete a Homegroup in Windows

Published: at 06:49 AM

A Homegroup is a feature in Windows that allows you to share files and printers between computers in a home network. However, if you want to leave or delete a Homegroup, follow the steps below.

How to Leave a Homegroup

  1. Open the Control Panel:

    • Press Win + R, type control, and press Enter.
    • Go to Network and Sharing Center.
  2. Leave the Homegroup:

    • Under Homegroup (on the left side), click Leave the homegroup.
    • If you are the only member of the homegroup, the system will prompt you to delete the homegroup. If there are other members, leaving will simply remove you from the group, and they will continue using the Homegroup.
  3. Confirm the Action:

    • Select Leave the Homegroup when prompted, and follow the on-screen instructions.

How to Delete a Homegroup

  1. Shut down all the PCs using the Homegroup.

    • Ensure that no other computer is currently connected to the Homegroup before attempting to delete it.
  2. Delete the Homegroup from a computer that is still part of the Homegroup:

    • Open Control Panel and go to Network and Sharing Center.
    • Under Homegroup, click on Leave the homegroup.
    • If you are the last member, the system will prompt you to delete the homegroup.
  3. Remove Shared Resources:

    • After leaving the Homegroup, ensure that any shared resources (files, printers) are unshared.
    • You can go to File Explorer, right-click the shared folder or printer, and choose PropertiesSharing tabStop sharing.

Troubleshooting Homegroup Issues

If you’re having trouble leaving or deleting a Homegroup, try the following steps:

  1. Check if Homegroup services are running:

    • Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
    • Ensure that the HomeGroup Listener and HomeGroup Provider services are running.
  2. Shut down all PCs:

    • After leaving the Homegroup, ensure that all other devices connected to the Homegroup are turned off to prevent reconnection.
  3. Use Network Reset:

    • If you’re unable to leave or delete the Homegroup, you can reset network settings by going to Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Network Reset.

Leaving or deleting a Homegroup in Windows is relatively simple, but if you’re facing issues, ensure that all other connected devices are shut down, and all shared resources are properly unshared.
